What
is VoIP ?
VoIP will allow you to make telephone
calls using a computer, over the Internet. VoIP converts the
voice signal from your telephone into a digital signal that
travels over the internet then converts it back at the other
end so you can speak to anyone with a regular phone number.
When placing a VoIP call using a phone with a special adapter,
you will hear a dial tone, and then dial just like always.
VoIP can also allow you to make a telephone call right from
your computer using a regular telephone or a microphone.
How Can I Place a VoIP Call?
Pick up your telephone; dial the telephone number, and using
the adaptor that connects you to your high speed internet.
The call will go through your regular telephone company to
a VoIP provider. Then the call goes over the internet to the
person you are calling. You can also use a headset that is
plugged into your computer and use your keyboard to dial the
telephone number. The call is then routed through your cable
modem.
What Kind of Equipment
Do I Need?
You will need a broadband (high speed Internet) connection
is required. This can be through a cable modem, or high speed
services such as DSL or a local area network. You can hook
up an inexpensive microphone to your computer and send your
voice through a cable modem or connect a phone directly to
a telephone adaptor.
Is there a difference
between making a Local Call and a Long Distance Call?
Some VoIP providers offer free services while others may charge
for different area code calls. It can mean that if you call
outside your area code you could be charged for long distance
and others calling you from outside your area code may be
charged a fee.
If I have VoIP, who can
I call?
That depends on the service you choose, you might be only
able to call other subscribers, or you could call any phone
number any where in the world. When using VoIP you can call
a local number, a long distance number, a mobile phone, or
an international number.
You can also use the service and talk with more than one person
at a time. The person you are calling does not need any special
equipment in order for you to call them or for them to receive
the call from you.
